Understanding Timor-Leste 2013

Two journeys in Indonesian-occupied Timor-Leste, 1991 and 1997

Following the 1975 Indonesian invasion and occupation of Timor-Leste, foreign travellers were barred entry. Little news was then heard from Timor-Leste until the beginning of 1989, when Indonesia More… re-opened Timor-Leste to foreign visitors, hoping to show the world that there was no local opposition to their rule. What non-Timorese knew of conditions in Timor-Leste during the remainder of the Indonesian occupation came mainly from the observations of political activists and journalists, who had usually travelled to the country specifically for that purpose.
